VIP Client Spotlight: Becky

Who is Becky?

Becky is a hard-working, competitive, and highly focused woman in pursuit of her personal and professional goals. She is kind & has a lot of energy with a zest for life others find contagious. 

Mom to four fur-babies of all ages and sizes. Becky’s husband of 5-years will tell you her love for her dogs surpasses her love for literally everything else.

Becky spends the summer months on her boat in the St. Croix River and in the winter, you can find her snowmobiling and spending time with her pro Snocross team. 

What made you want to start your fitness journey?

I’ve always been extremely active playing in multiple co-rec leagues & and working out regularly.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 27 years old. The chemotherapy treatments made me lethargic, had a loss of appetite, and suffered from insomnia. My body’s muscle and fat loss were unreal, changing my body composition in the 4-months of treatment and maybe even more detrimental, I had lost the ability to focus on anything as I was recovering. I wasn’t happy with how I looked and I didn’t know how to fix it. The only thing I was happy about was the fact that the scale was the lowest I’d seen since high school! At the same time, I needed to get back into an active lifestyle and I thought with proper sleep and activity I’d be able to get back to my old self. I started by going to a gym and quickly found it too boring. It was boring (I learned this working with Okon Fitness) because I showed up without a plan. I just jumped on any weight rack without any real intention. Then, I discovered Orange Theory Fitness & fell in love with it, hitting the studio 5-6 times per week. Still no real goals or purpose with the in-studio workout sessions, but I enjoyed the OTF community and I started seeing results. However, something was still missing, and I needed something more. As I thought more about my journey, I realized that as healthy as I thought I was, I really didn’t know how to navigate my meals & didn’t have the knowledge or discipline to adhere to a plan to see the results I wanted. I was discussing this all with a friend when she suggested considering Okon Fitness. With coaching from Angie, I’ve learned so much more about health & fitness + the Okon community provides the support and accountability I need to see the results I want. 

What inspires you most? 

I am drawn to nearly any athletic-based story: Olympics, Final Four, the Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant stories all make me so proud.

I also love learning about people who work hard, earn their success, and are willing to share their stories for anyone to learn from. The Okon family is included here! Each person has their unique path & how we get it is inspiring to see over time.

What have been the biggest obstacles getting started?

The biggest obstacle for me was realizing what I needed. For so long, I thought I was living a healthy life in the kitchen & when I started tracking my food when working with Angie at Okon Fitness, I quickly realized where I was missing the mark.

Why did you choose to work with Okon Fitness?

I love the fact that it’s a woman-owned and run business. I also appreciate the fact that Angie & Cora truly care about each one of their clients. They take the time to learn about each person, listen and provide helpful advice to ensure we reach our goals. I’m loving the results I’m seeing & it’s even better hearing people’s responses to my change. 

Being a busy hard working woman, how have you managed all the things in your life?

Managing a busy lifestyle comes with priorities. Understanding what’s important to me and prioritizing it is the key to my success. Being realistic about life’s curveballs is also important. I try not to be too hard on myself if I miss a day in the gym because of something out of my control.  

Have those around you been supportive?

I’ve not had the best support system in my journey. I’m my own advocate. No matter how much I explain it, my husband doesn’t understand why I want to follow my program so closely.  

Has your outlook/mindset changed since battling breast cancer? How has it changed your life?

Between the time I first felt the lump in my breast to the time I was officially diagnosed, I did a lot of reflection. I made the choice to only include good, positive people in my life. I decided I no longer had space for either mental or physical toxicity. Doing this has eliminated unnecessary drama and instead filled my time with more joy and love.

Do you have any mottos or sayings that you live by every day?

Strive Satisfied – I heard this the other day and I fell in love with it. One of my many faults is that I’m a perfectionist. I need to give myself some grace by allowing myself to enjoy the success I’ve created while continuing with the positive momentum. Its true things could always be better but also take the time to be happy with how far I’ve come and how much I’ve achieved. 

What is some advice you have for someone who is just getting started?

Make a plan you can manage & stick to it as close as possible. 

+ Don’t beat yourself up. 

+ Give yourself credit in the positive moments.

Fun Facts about Becky?

I’m the captain of my boat. It is uncommon to see women captaining larger (37’+) boats. So, when I pull into my marina with my husband riding comfortably in the back, I hear over the marine radio, “Hey, watch this chick pull this boat in!” 

RUDE, right? Well, turns out they don’t drive as well as I do and have a few lessons to learn – both in boat handling & manners. 

I’ve inspired other women in my boating family to learn to drive as well ❤️

Favorite healthy meal?

Grilled Chicken with a vegetable medley zucchini, asparagus, mushrooms, peppers + garlic -- OR -- any arugula salad!

Favorite cheat?

Ribeye steak with Mushrooms & Asparagus

Favorite lift?

Deadlifts or Hip Thrusts 

Favorite physical trait about yourself?

Trapezius muscles
