We are excited for you to get to know our latest VIP Spotlight, Kim!

“If you’re really hungry, you’ll eat fish and veggies.”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told myself this as I’ve resisted the urge to eat a candy bar or stop at a drive-thru on the way home.

As cliché as it sounds, changing my mindset was the first step I had to take in order to start seeing results.  While I’ve always been happy with myself, regardless of the number on the scale, I knew I wasn’t where I wanted to be physically.  I spent years trying to see change, but I was ultimately my own roadblock.  It was a continuous cycle of me putting forth the effort, not getting results, and giving up.  I would see all these transformations on my IG feed, admire them and long for the change myself, but didn’t think it would ever come.  Fast forward through a lot of trial and error and here I am, a person with her own transformation story to share…

So, who am I?

I’m a single mom who is outgoing, self-reliant, a bit of a smart-ass, and very much a “Type A”.

I work two jobs and just finished grad school 6 months ago.  I never grew up playing sports and contributed my once flat stomach to a killer metabolism.  That metabolism was nowhere to be found once I became pregnant with my daughter.  I had a stressful pregnancy and poor eating habits which caused me to pack on 60lbs.  The day she turned one, I was still carrying the "baby weight" and knew it was time for a change.  I started running and found myself eating not much more than chicken, veggies, and rice daily.  I managed to lose all but 10lbs of my added weight only to gain it all back over the following years.  Pair a new job, loss of a parent, partying, and those poor eating habits with an underactive thyroid, and you’d be surprised at how quickly you can gain weight!

That’s when I started trying various workout programs, diets, waist trainers, and not-so-magic pills.

I would spend 4-5 days in the gym only to watch the scale continue to rise.  While I felt like I was making healthy decisions 80% of the time, the other 20% was holding me back (& let’s be real, it was probably closer to a 60/40 split).  I found it easy to blame it on my thyroid and damn near accepted that I was going to be in that position forever.

It wasn’t until I really took a close look at my daily routines until I realized just how much I was hindering my progress.

I started following Angie on Instagram a few years ago and even joined a couple of lifestyle programs of hers.  I enjoyed the workouts and the meal plans that her programs offered and started each program determined to “win”.  I saw women following the Okon program and killing it but my after photos looked the exact same as my before.  How?!  Because I didn’t follow the programs like they were outlined.  I’d start strong only to cave into the instant gratification of a craving I had and let a small slip turn into me falling completely off the wagon.  Time and time again.

It’s like I had all the pieces of the puzzle right in front of me, but I wasn’t putting them together.

Just under a year ago, I was involved in a serious car accident that should’ve left me worse off.  That is when I really stopped with my excuses and started piecing my puzzle together.  While I’ve always been one to appreciate life, the accident gave me a different level of gratefulness.  I stopped taking my mobility and well-being for granted and started making more conscious food choices, moving more, and using the tools I learned from previous programs.  This meant more effective workouts, consistent meal prep, and staying on the wagon- even when I had an inevitable slip up.

After having some success on my own, I decided to enroll in the VIP program with Okon.

I felt like I needed to increase my level of accountability and have someone with experience in my corner to keep me from falling back.  I thoroughly enjoyed working with Angie and partnering with her and the Okon team really increased my desire to keep going.  Angie is down-to-earth, inspiring, and emboldening.  As the days went on, I found myself having fewer and fewer slips.  I committed to the program wholeheartedly - rarely missing a workout, staying aligned with my meal plan, and not drinking an ounce of alcohol.  The results I saw in 12-weeks were the best I ever had and really had a positive impact on my lifestyle choices.  At the end of my 12-week program, I chose to venture out on my own again tasked with more information and dedication.  I’ve recycled a lot of the workouts, remained consistent with my diet, and kept moving forward but it wasn’t quite the same.

I found that I pushed myself harder when I knew someone had visibility to my changes.

The weekly progress pics, app tracking, and group of badass women that make up the Okon Tribe are a highlight of my journey.  As such, I was elated to enroll back into a Lifestyle program with Okon to leverage all the tools they have to offer.

There were plenty of days that I didn’t feel like going to the gym or eating my prepped food but did so anyway.  Those were the days that had the biggest impact.  No matter the obstacle, I kept going.  If I couldn’t work out in the morning, I would do so during lunch or after work.  Some days I even did all three.

From someone who spent far too much time looking for results in all the wrong ways, here is my advice to anyone sick and tired of being in a rut:

Screw your comfort zone.

While the results don’t always come easy, they’re only as hard as you make it.  Replace your excuses with actions.  Stop focusing on the things you can’t change and start focusing on the ones you have control over.  Instead of diving into a million changes, focus on 1-2 things at a time.  Quickly changing everything is more likely to lead you to a burn out while really focusing on small changes and building from the ground up will make an impact on your overall lifestyle and ability to maintain it.  Find ways to hold yourself accountable.  Some of mine include daily check-ins on social media and not allowing myself to miss the gym 2 days in a row.

I’m not where I want to be but I’m closer to it now more than ever.
